The use of blogs in classrooms

A blog could be used in my fifth grade Language Arts classroom by having students write book reviews.  The blog could serve as a discussion board for students to talk about different story elements from the books they read.  Students could write whether or not they would recommend a book they've read to other students.  Comments could be made on the book reviews by student readers saying whether or not they plan on reading the book from the review. A blog could also be used as a way for students to interact with content.  In my fifth grade Social Studies class, students could comment on questions I post about content they've been learning in class.  It could serve as a closure type activity that they could complete in school on ipads or computers, or even at home after school.  In my fifth grade Science class, I could post videos of experiments on my blog and take pictures of student projects to display on the site.  A blog could also be used as a service learning opportunity to help students raise awareness for a particular topic.  They could encourage friends and family members to join our class blog and get informed about an important topic.  I think blogs can enhance a lesson by adding a real world connection component.  Students are more involved and engaged when given the opportunity to connect with technology.

I really like how the student can interact with the blog (book reviews, discussions etc.), this should create some really interesting discussions and responses. Would the book reviews etc. be archived for viewing or eventually deleted with the completion of each class?

  2. I thought so too. I would archive the reviews for the class and then delete them once a class year ended. I think it woul be fun to print out a copy of all the reviews from the year and create a packet so students could keep them in the future!

Your idea for using blogs in your Social Studies classes is a good one. Using a blog as a 'ticket out the door' is a terrific way to summarize your lesson and integrate the use of computers in your classes. Another advantage to blogging is that you don't need to take home a briefcase full of papers, only your laptop to grade their responses.

I agree with Mrs. Klinger about your virtual exit card strategy. You mentioned using blogs in Science to video you conducting a Science experiment. Why not use a "behavior" student to video tape and add to your blog? You are empowering that student by catching them at their best.

  6. You have many great ideas. I really liked that for every subject you have a way to use blogging. Blogging will help the students become stronger writers, a skills I believe most people lack. My favorite blog was the book review. You are getting the students to not only write their ideas and respond to others but you are also getting the students excited about reading, another thing that is extremely hard thing to do. With blogging, the parents can check out what the students are learning and see what their child is interested in.
